A Homely Bird

So Lisa Mascaro describes, no, not the horrid, frightening genetic monstrosity depicted to the left, but the lowly sage-grouse. (Sun)

The sage-grouse, which dwells in many parts of Gibbons’ Country, has been the subject of something of a range war. Environmentalists have struggled to place the homely bird on the endangered species list as it’s habitat has [...]

Scientisty

You think our own home grown Mr. Science and chief Nevada volcano watcher, Congressman Jim Gibbons, would support the Bill of Rights for Scientists and Engineers? Oh, wait, look at those first two….

"1. Federal
policy shall be made using the best available science and analysis both
from within the government and from the rest of society.

"2. The
federal [...]

Editorial Choice

In the hardcopy Club for Growth Review Journal today, they had some empty space that needed filling so the editorial bored reprinted a piece from the Baltimore Sun on the politicization of science.

One can only wonder why the CFGRJ would run such an article, which is critical of the Bush administration’s abuse of science and scientists, [...]

Mooney Versus Robespierre

Chris Mooney actually quotes Rake’s Las Vegas Sun story about yearlyKos on his site, and has a response to Not-Bob Uithoven on his blog, the Intersection:

I love that Gibbons’ campaign manager was drawn by this
reporter into responding to me. "Jim Gibbons is a scientist"–as if
that’s an excuse for putting out that deeply misleading mercury report.
And then [...]

He's No Scientist

Saturday’s LVSun solved the Mystery of the Missing Gibbons. Timothy Pratt found Congressman and Nevada Governor wannabe Jim Gibbons over at Toto’s trying to convince local Hispanics that he didn’t really mean to vote for the legislation that would make it a felony to be undocumented in the U.S. and would have required the imprisonment and [...]

Gibbons Spews Pseudo-Science Like, Well, A Volcano

Jim Gibbons, um, erupted with a particularly nonsensical response to a question about his infamous report  on mercury emissions.

Gibbons was interviewed over at Nevada Newsmakers and was asked for his reaction to a quote from Chris Mooney‘s story (via Molly Ball I suspect) on Gibbons’ poorly researched report which under-reported the effects of mercury emissions on [...]

Senate Trying to Fix Gibbons’ Mercury Mess

The Senate is taking up a measure to repeal the bad EPA rules for mercury emissions from power plants.

These are the very rules supported by the infamous Gibbons and Pombo report which cherry-picked scientific findings they liked and ignored anything they didn’t.

Yep, it’s the junk you get while neocons like Gibbons wage their war on science.

Nevadans [...]

Gibbons’ War On Science, Part Two

I have been reading my copy of Chris Mooney’s Republican War on Science. Chris Mooney will be on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show, Monday, September 12 (11pm,  channel  56 on COX in Vegas)

Like I said earlier, Jim Gibbons does make an appearance in the book, but being a back bencher, he only gets a quick walk on.

He appears in a section of the book discussing how Republican Congressmen worked to undermine EPA reports linking mercury emissions from electric powerplants and unhealthy mercury levels found in the fish we eat:

Nevertheless, in late 2000, the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that 60 percent of mercury deposited in the United States comes from sources within this country. Other scientists put the estimate somewhat lower, but still in the neighborhood of 40 percent or more. But the take-home point is this: No matter what other countries may be doing, and in spite of natural mercury sources, our domestic industries contribute very significantly to the problem. This fact, combined with the dangerous threat that mercury poses to unborn children, explains perfectly well why the Clinton administration had sought to regulate the substance stringently in the first place.

That hasn’t stopped the denials from conservative Republicans.

In February 2005, Reps. Richard Pombo and Jim Gibbons of the GOP-controlled House Committee on Resources released an astonishing contrarian report on mercury pollution claiming (among other things) that "current, peer-reviewed scientific literature does not show any link between U.S. power plant emissions and mercury in fish." The report had the gall to cherry-pick language from an EPA Federal Register notice suggesting scientific uncertainty on this matter. Yet it failed to note that in the very same paragraph, the EPA had stated that "there is a plausible link between emissions of mercury from anthropogenic sources (including coal-fired electric utility steam generating units) and methylmercury in fish." Indeed, while scientists may not be able to quantify exactly how much U.S. power plant mercury ultimately winds up in fish that reach the dinner table, that hardly means they are unjustified in assuming that a very significant amount does. (p 140).

Linking and boldface added by yours truly.

Jim Gibbons Helps Poison Utah with Mercury

Aha! Now we know why Gibbons was so hot to help the Bush-run EPA weaken regulations for Mercury emssions. He’s helping huge foreign Gold cartels to poison Utahns!

Mercury filled smoke spewing from the stacks of Elko goldmines is poisoning Northern Utah and the Great Salt Lake according to a local television station in Salt Lake and [...]
