The Review-Journal, which was oddly worried in the hardcopy edition about "civility" in political discourse today–a position that so obviously contradicts the editorial policies of the paper that one could only spew one's morning coffee upon reading it–tells us that the real reason for supporting local charities is to hook up with power players. (RJ)

Ah, yes, do good only if you can get personal gain out of it. Surely the Vegas golden rule.

No doubt dear old Immanuel Kant was a-spinning in his grave. One of his pet peeves was folks who think you should only do good stuff if you figure you'll get something out of it. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy sums up of the point nicely:

[P]ossessing and maintaining one's moral goodness is the very
condition under which anything else is worth having or
pursuing. Intelligence and even pleasure are worth having only on the
condition that they do not require giving up one's fundamental moral
convictions. The value of a good will thus cannot be that it secures
certain valuable ends, whether of our own or of others, since their
value is entirely conditional on our possessing and maintaining a good
will. Indeed, since it is good under any condition, its goodness must
not depend on any particular conditions obtaining. Thus, Kant points
out that a good will must then also be good in itself and not
in virtue of its relationship to other things such as the agent's own
happiness or overall welfare. (SEP)

But then, using Sig "Wille Horton/Anoint Gibbons" Rogich as an example of a "successful" Nevadan doing "good works" is sorta like putting up Satan as an example of an angel. Arguably true, but still, you've got to be kidding.

(RJ)

In particular, the Gube’s Shylocks want the judge in charge of case–wherein said waitress, Chrissy Mazzeo, is suing the Gube and his cronies for undermining her rights to due process and equal protection under the law–to suppress Midnight Jim’s medical, personnel, and financial records. You know, so the rest of us don’t learn how much the Sheriff and the Cleanup Man charged him in consultation fees during all those calls on Jim’s Night Out.

Drat. Now the VGO crack medical team won’t be able to analyze the Gube’s semen.

Thank God.

Front and center at the motion to suppress orgy was none other than the man who gave you GIbbers, Sig Rogich. Mr Rogich’s attorneys were refreshingly honest:

Rogich, president of Rogich Communication Group, says keeping his business contacts private are
“paramount to the success of his business.”

No doubt. If Nevada citizens ever learned the true nature of Mr. Rogich’s “private” dealings, there’d be a mass vomit which would last a good three days–and God knows how many indictments.

Still, one can’t help wondering if Mr. Rogich’s new found senate majority leading friend won’t lend some unwelcome support to the Gube’s suppression frenzy. Now there’d be an unwelcome irony: Democrats helping to undermine Mazzeo’s rights for the sake of a distasteful alliance with a political operative with dirty underpants. Let’s hope that possibility remains a mere creature of blogger paranoia.

And, yes, if that pic somehow reminds you of Mitt Romney, well, it should.

Yes, it looks like “misunderstanding” was the word of the day after Midnight Jim’s Night Out.

Everybody was using it. The sheriff who was taking more calls from the Guber and his handler-in-chief than a gøøbernatorial sexting victim, and the false friend who was pressuring the Gube’s lust-object to say it, too:

But in her affidavit, Mazzeo referred to a set of intriguing
circumstances in the hours after her 2006 encounter with Gibbons that
she contends bolsters her case.

Mazzeo alleges that Mossett-Puhek tried to persuade her to stop
pursuing charges against Gibbons and tell police the incident was
nothing but a “misunderstanding.”

The afternoon after the incident, Mazzeo wrote, she did tell police
she no longer wanted to press charges, and the next day Young was
quoted in the Las Vegas Review-Journal as saying, “No crime occurred.
It’s just a misunderstanding.” (Sun)

It’s almost as if a highly skilled political operative were feeding everyone a set of talking points in an orchestrated attempt to quash the incident in the midst of a heated campaign. You know, if only there were someone like that involved in the incident, why, it would sure explain a lot.

The well-oiled political elites who allegedly helped Gibbers cover up his extramarital and unwanted gropings, climbed over themselves today to deny that they ever covered up anything–despite the fact that covering up stuff is a prominent part of their respective job descriptions.

Willy Horton publicist and gube maker Sig Rogich dug deep into his bag of spinster tricks to label Chrissy Mazzeo’s lawsuit against Gibbons and himself a “publicity stunt.”

Oh, okay. Siggy’s a bit off his game there. I’m sure he’ll do better once he’s had a little time to think it over and once he’s invented something for Mazzeo to publicize with the “publicity stunt.” Is she perhaps starting up a line of cookies, called Gibbersnaps? Or maybe, touting tasteless t-shirts?

Don Campbell, who seems to be everybody’s attorney in this town, at least insofar as he counts among his clients the only rag defending the Gube these days, says he will “vigorously defend” the suit. It’s exceeding unlikely that he himself will actually be defending the suit, however, given he’s one of the co-defendants. He himself believes that he was included in the suit to preclude him from acting for the defense, perhaps having forgotten that according to Mazzeo, the reason he’s on the suit is that he may have destroyed evidence. (AP) Has he forgotten about pushing the “erase” button on the tape machine holding the incriminating evidence so soon? Allegedly, of course. Oh, so, allegedly.

However, the star of the show himself did not disappoint with the opacity of his rejoinders. Gibbons himself denied the oh so alleged allegations with these immortal words:

“It just looks like this is another flagrant attempt to utilize the legal system for purposes that it shouldn’t be legalized or used for.”

Yes, we wouldn’t want to legalize the legal system, would we? But, let him continue:

“There’s really no basis, from what I understand, for this lawsuit,” he said. “I don’t know what she’s complaining about or why.” (RJ)

From what he “understands”? Wasn’t he there in the garage when the alleged assault took place? Does he think his actions there could indeed be “understood” to constitute assault and attempted rape? Doesn’t he believe in his own innocence? Is he expressing doubts?

Or does he simply never think before opening his mouth?

Oh, and what she’s complaining about is that she believes he said to her: “I’m not going to fuck you. I’m going to rape you” while throwing her around and pinning her against the wall. Is he thinking she was supposed to like that sort of thing?

Meanwhile, Mazzeo’s mouthpiece plans to depose still not-quite-Gibbers-ex Dawn as part of the suit, and thinks he can pull seven figures out of the hides of the oh so alleged co-conspirators. (AP)

I wonder if he’ll take some Elko cattle country as part of the settlement. I hear it’s got forty or fifty thousand head on it. Allegedly.

Ooo. A weblink to click on: vindicatemazzeo.com. Be warned, the site is horribly designed.

(KLAS,Sun,AP,MM)

We learn:

Mazzeo’s attorney reveals in the suit that since she was a child, she has suffered from thyroid cancer. So, Gibbers was picking on a cancer victim.

Mazzeo’s attorney claims that Gibbons and his lawyer induced the district attorney to reduce the charges against a fellow who allegedly beat up Mazzeo several weeks before Gibbons took his shot. The idea was to get the fellow off so he could scare Mazzeo into backing off from prosecuting the Gibbers.

Gibbons’ groped Mazzeo in McCormick and Schmick’s, wrapped his legs around her’s, and said his marriage was “overly boring,” according to the filing. Hmm. Now, Dawn knows why he wanted the divorce.

Mazzeo’s claims Gibbons was “immediately infatuated” with Mazzeo, which is consistent with the fact that he’s been chasing a Mazzeo lookalike for around 15 years. (RJ)

Mazzeo considered Gibbons to be “a boring and undesirable man.” Hey, who’s going to disagree with that?

Mazzeo also claims that Gibbons stole the keys to her as a pretext to walk her to her truck. Those keys were never found. Of course, nobody bothered to search the Gube or his hotel room for ‘em.

Ooo. This is new. After the alleged garage grope when Mazzeo was wandering around a nearby La Quinta, she claims that Gibbons followed her there, found her, grabbed her arm, and said: “Wait, I need to talk to you. You screwed up because you called 911. You’ll be sorry.” Gibbons knew about her whereabouts because, Mazzeo says, her gal pal Pennie Puhle called Gibbons after talking to Mazzeo on her cell phone.

During the mysterious 32-45 minute gap between the time Gibbons left the alleged grope garage and entered his hotel, Mazzeo believes he went back to the garage looking for the key card to his hotel lest it be found in the garage and used as evidence agin him.

An officer at the scene told Mazzeo “Chrissy, we believe you. There is so much evidence. We got the tapes, we believe you.” The officer was referring to surveillance camera tapes from the garage, Mazzeo believes. The ones that mysteriously disappeared for a few weeks and then resurfaced–with a picture of a cat’s butt. The officer then just disappears. He doesn’t make a statement or appear as a witness or anything.

Mazzeo claims that Pennie Puhle spent most of that night conveying threats from Sig Rogich trying to scare Mazzeo from pressing charges.

Puhle purportedly said: “They are going to cur off your arms if you do not sign a silence paper…the only way to make it go away is to sign the silence clause…They need to go over your statement with you…As soon as we sign the paper, they will give you money and me too.” “They” being Siggy and the gang.

Mazzeo claims Metro detectives kept her away from the actual crime scene during a re-enactment and “constantly berated” her and accused her of being drunk. Ah, the sexual violence squad sure knows how to treat victims, don’t they?

She claims then Sheriff Young let Gibbons and his attorney view the tapes even though Gibbons was the prime suspect. She also believes that Young and Gibbons’ attorney Campbell destroyed the tapes.

Gee, I sure hope none of this ruins the Gube’s trip back east! Okay, I made that last bit up.

Dealers know how to count to 21 without (casino owners) standing over

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons insisted on making yet another appointment to his shaky administration today. And he just made it shakier.

Gibbons has appointed Stacie Truesdell to the Taxicab Authority. The Taxicab Authority has caused Gibbers problems before. Gibbons axed Richard Land, the Authority's chief, in March with his usual lack of class. Gibbons sent an underling with the pink slip and, of course, the reasons for the removal were non-existent. (RJ) That's because reason is non-existent in the Gube mansion.

Truesdell is perhaps best known for her failed run for the Las Vegas City Council. Questions arose during the campaign about her close ties to developers and her campaign tactics:

Stacie Truesdell's ties to
developers and her campaign tactics raise questions about her fitness
to serve on the Las Vegas City Council, her opponents say as the Ward 5
race enters its final days.

The Rancho Manor Neighborhood Association and Unity in the Community
II say Truesdell's job as a lawyer who represents developers will
hamper her ability to be effective in a ward where growth is critical.

The groups also are upset that Truesdell's camp revealed personal
information about her opponent, Ricki Barlow, and his family on her
campaign Web site.

And they complain that Las Vegas Planning Commissioner Rick
Truesdell, the candidate's father, placed an angry phone call to Barlow
in response to one of Barlow's campaign fliers. (Sun)

During the campaign, Truesdell's staff somehow posted the social security numbers of her opponent's ex-wife and kid on the Internets, and because Truesdell's dad sits on the Las Vegas Planning Commission, that raised all sorts of interesting conflict-of-interest questions, although, no doubt, he was just protecting his little girl from that mean old Ricki Barlow, her opponent, when he made the call. (RJ)

Truesdell also works for the law firm of Jones Vargas. Yep, that's the law firm whose ties to Gibbons' Pygmalion (Victor Frankenstein?) Sig Rogich raised eyebrows during the Mazzeo meltdown. It was a JV lawyer that delivered the mysterious vanishing video tapes to the cops after they went missing a few days.

All an incredible cosmic coincidence, no doubt. But, another heck of a pick, Gov'nor! Especially after that top secret Efstratis appointment.

Hurry, hurry, hurry!

Step right up folks! Don’t be shy! There’s plenty for everybody!

Have you ever wanted to own your own Governor? Now, I know that might seem like the sorta thing only the Superrich can dream of, but no more. Even losers like you who’ve never held a bag full of poker chips in your rough peasant hands can own a piece of the Governor!

That’s right! Even the most humble among you, dear friends, can own a bit of your beloved Governor. All you have to do–and you’d be amazed how simple, and even legal this is–is contribute a modest amount to the Jim Gibbons Legal Defense Slush Fund 2.0.(RGJ,RJ,LVG)

Yes, you heard me right, dear friends. Two. Point. Oh. You see, this ain’t your old, rusty, nasty, not reported to Congress in violation of Ethics Rules, and officially deemed illegal by the Governor himself, defunct Jim Gibbons Illegal Legal Defense Slush Fund. Heavens, no, my friends!

This is the brand new, barely legal Jim Gibbons Legal Defense Slush Fund.

That’s right, friends. Barely legal. You see that new law that allows our fine politicians to solicit contributions to hire only the finest legal defense teams when the Sheriff or FBI comes a knocking, requires said politicians must refrain–yes, refrain–from soliciting funds for 30 days prior to, or after, a legislative session. Oh, and don’t forget, even during one.

Our Governor, who loves to play at the fringes of legality, waited until June 29 to submit notice to the Secretary of State of the existence of the fund. See, our Governor didn’t waste a minute! And look, he has a whole web page to himself over on the SoS site!

What, you say, doesn’t the special session count for anything? What was it, chopped liver?

Please, dear friends, you wouldn’t support the Gibbons brand if it didn’t have that sex-offender, grafty, “bad boy” feel to it, now would you? Besides, for special sessions, our politicians only have to wait 15 days before money grubbing again.

So, pony up, Nevadans! Join the ranks of patriots like Sheldon Adelson, Warren Trepp, and Sig Rogich! Help your Governor defend himself against terrorist loving organizations like frightened women and the FBI!

And unlike Trepp, you don’t have to use poker chips! The Governor accepts cash, checks, gold bullion, and all major credit cards. And he won’t say “no” to a kiss for the ladies!

So, join today! Be the first on your block to own a piece of the Governor!

But that’s not all you get, friends. Funnel a couple of bundles of $10,000 each through your many limited liability corporations--all perfectly legal in Our Fair State–and the Governor will come to your home or place of business and personally let you put it in a Jack Abramoff Como II genuine fur hat.

But that’s still not all! Hey, we’ll even throw in an actual Nevada State Senator. Yeah, he’s bald, but he’s a real go-getter. Why lobbyists love him so much, they’ll even solicit campaign money illegally behind his back.

So he says, anyway. (RJ) Wink, wink!

Disclaimer: The Governor may not actually come to your home or place of business to take your contribution in a Como II fur hat. Avoid where prohibited by law, which ain’t here in Nevada.

After D.A. Mr. Roger decided to dump a hot-political-potato and not pursue charges of Gross Stupidity During A Molestation against the Gube-elect, we learn that both parties in the, uh, dispute changed their stories during multiple questionings. (Sun, RJ)

Now, wait. Super-scientist, combat-pilot, and law school graduate Jim Gibbons couldn’t get his story straight?? Yes, I can see where goon-harassed, media-shy, and, perhaps, smacked-around Mazzeo might be a might confused about the details of that bizarre evening. But, battle-hardened Jim??

Turns out that there was a 32-minute gap in the Gibster’s original rehearsal of events. Between the time Gibbons claims to have left Mazzeo in some parking garage or another–nobody is quite sure which one anymore–and the time he opened his hotel room door, 32 minutes were swallowed up by the space-time continuum. Gibbons, the new leader of our state, answers in his second interview that, oh yeah, he was fumbling around looking for his hotel key during that time, which he somehow dropped while roaming around the perimeter of his hotel not, repeat, not groping young ladies. Yes, we’re still talking about the same super-scientist, combat-pilot, law-school graduate who’s just been elected Governor of Nevada.

And how, we read, can Gibbons’ chief campaign guru Sig Rogich still be on vacation through all this? Shouldn’t he be ordering cocktail weenies for the Gib-balls <del>next week</del> at the end of January? And I suppose I should be flattered that he felt the need to sick the B-man on my earlier post. The honor of the Nevada’s Republican Party is at stake, I suppose. Should’ve worried about that a bit more before the last primary, guys.

Hey Kids! Planning to run for political office some day? Don’t do this!

Other witnesses interviewed by police add more twists to the evening. George Garcia, a parking attendant, told detectives he saw Gibbons and a woman believed to be Mazzeo walking through the restaurant’s parking lot that evening, as Gibbons mentioned.

“According to Garcia,” [Metro Detective] Hnatuick wrote, “Gibbons had his arm around the female, and she was leaning into him. Startled by this, Garcia stopped and asked Gibbons if he needed a car retrieved,” the report said. “Gibbons, according to Garcia, shooed him away and, as Garcia continued on, he heard both Gibbons and the female laughing.” (Sun)
