Gibbo-tific Method

So, we learn today that the Governor didn’t know anything about the "Edmonton" education initiative he’s touting. So, how does he make decisions? By Ouija board?? Bird entrails?

And the War on Terror in Nevada still seems to require the utmost secrecy concerning Gibbons’ shakin’. We learn today that the Governor really isn’t a doctor since he [...]

Hot Spots in the War on Mercury

Haven’t griped about coal-fired power  or mercury emissions for awhile. So, here goes.

New study of mercury in wildlife finds a bunch in Maine, New Hampshire and other points northeast. Likely source of the mercury? Coal-fired plants, say real scientists.
Great Basin Mine Watch says a new law requiring monitoring of mercury emissions from gold mines doesn’t go [...]

Reducing Burdens on Poo’ Wittle Multinationals

The EPA is going through with changes to how companies will report the toxins they release. (US PIRG, NPR). That old nemesis of Jim Gibbons and his Multinational Mining Overlords, the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) will be undergoing two new restrictions supposedly to reduce the "burdens" companies face in reporting how badly they are poisoning Americans. [...]

New Push to Investigate Mercury Pollutin’ By Mines

Perhaps the most amazing aspect of the news that Environmental Groups such as Great Basin Mining Watch are seeking new studies of the effects of mercury pollution from Nevada mines on the environment is that the  Las Vegas Review Journal and Mining Industry Apologist Daily actually reprinted a portion of the AP story. A fuller version [...]

Everybody Loves TDPUD!

There was a media circus up in Truckee, California,  believe it or not. (RGJ) Four T.V. crews, and crack reporters from the San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, and National Public Radio watched as the Truckee Donner Public Utility District (TDPUD) voted against signing up to suck power from a dirty Utah coal-fired plant for 50 years.

As [...]

Everybody Rethinking Coal-Fired Plants

Except Nevada.

Utah: California cities under new rules requiring them to avoid power from coal-fired plants are balking at buying from dirty Utah plants. (SLTrib AP) Hope those Nevada plants aren’t planning to sell power to California.
Indiana: Indiana’s plants fourth highest in mercury polluting. (NWITimes)
British Columbia: Protests set against coal-fired plants. (Abbotsford News)
Malaysia: Students protest planned plant [...]

Firing Up Ely

Ahh. Nothing like the bidness section of the CFGRJ to drum up uncritical support for coal-fired plants in Ely. Jobs and cheap energy, folks! Jobs and cheap energy!

Until the insurance companies come a-looking for somebody to sue to pay for all the floods and droughts and property damage caused by those lovely green house gasses spewing [...]

50 Year Gamble on Coal

Well, well. Down here in the sinful south, we get the impression that the folks up in "Gibbons’ Country" are solid, conservative sorts. Boy, we’re we wrong. Quite the opposite, folks up North are devil-may-care gamblers willing to take a chance and throw good money at new-fangled technologies.

According to the Nevada Appeal the Truckee Donner Public [...]

Did Somebody Say “Mercury”?

Senator Russ Feingold, stumping for Dina Titus, did today according to the AP:

‘Feingold compared Titus, the state Senate minority leader, with her
opponent, U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Reno, whom Feingold said had
received a zero on a League of Conservation Voters congressional
scorecard.

‘ "He was a co-author of a report that tried to minimize the
dangers of mercury, which is [...]

Northern Nevadans: The New Power Plant Lab Rats

Aren’t our Northern friends fortunate? They get to live close to nature and far from the gritty neon perversity that we down here call home.

Yep. Fortune handed them another charming benefit today: The news that a big power plant company is gearing up to do a little human experimentation on ‘em.

Sierra Pacific Resources will be testing [...]
